Mission

The World Library Partnership, Inc. (WLP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building global understanding by promoting literacy, learning and access to information.

WLP believes that libraries empower individuals and enrich communities. WLP advocates for sustainable, community-based libraries in developing areas of the world.

By supporting libraries and librarians, WLP mobilizes the power of information to make the world a better place for all.

The Need

The United Nations Development Programme defines "being excluded from the world of reading and communication" as one of the three fundamental elements of human poverty. Libraries are critical for community development and personal growth. As one Peace Corps Volunteer in the Congo wrote:"I cannot possibly express the need for a library in our community in words. We have nothing of the sort within at least 40 km...Teachers and students have no textbooks - maybe that goes without saying in the developing world. Our need for information is monumental; without it we rest stagnant"
