Help Volunteers Share the Power of ReadingLibraries feed hungry minds in rural South Africa. They provide the fuel for sustainable development and change. Libraries teach children to love books, assist health workers to prevent disease, provide entrepreneurs with business models and give farmers new ways to increase production and protect the environment. They nourish communities with ideas they can use to build a better future. They also help communities to preserve the knowledge and wisdom of past generations. In July and August, 2004, a group of librarians from around the world will use their professional skills to help communities in rural South Africa gain better access to knowledge. As Inform the World volunteers, they will spend one month living and working in rural communities. Together with their South African counterparts, the volunteers will complete practical projects to improve rural libraries and ensure that they will enrich generations of readers. The theme for the 2004 volunteer program is information literacy. Our
volunteers will teach educators how to use library materials in the classroom.
They will organize games and scavenger hunts that teach basic research
skills. They will assist library clubs to organize debates, performances,
open-houses, writing workshops and story times that will inspire people
to read. They will leave behind a group of library supporters with the
skills and enthusiasm to make the library a vibrant, inviting place. When
they return, the volunteers will share their experiences by giving talks
and writing articles. OR mail or fax the sponsorship form with your check, money order or credit card information to: The World Library Partnership |
