Innovative Information Projects in Southern Africa

Preview one of the stories from this film (see below)

Communities throughout Southern Africa are finding creative ways to preserve and share information. The important message of this film is that any community can create a vital information center - even without special resources or training. This film looks at six projects in three countries:

  • Children writing their own library
  • A man creating a museum to save his culture
  • A community making its own map for progress
  • Students saving indigenous plants and preserving their traditional uses
  • A community library started with homemade books that grew into a culture and information center
  • Donkey-driven "book mobiles" bringing resources to the most remote locations

The film was produced in six languages with support from the Ford Foundation. The price within the United States for VHS is $24.00 (shipping and handling included). For information about International shipping and non-VHS/NTSC formats, please email.

Inform the World 2000 South Africa: A Film by John Nicholson

The film touches on many important issues including the potential damage done to libraries by "book dumping" and sustainable alternatives that support African publishing. Proceeds support WLP. The price within the United States for VHS is $17.50 (shipping and handling included). For information about International shipping and non-VHS/NTSC formats, please email .

Pamoja: A Learning Activity for the Information Age

Pamoja is a hands-on activity that brings to life the importance of libraries around the world. Participants work together in teams to create countries with their own culture and information resources. Then they negotiate with other countries in a fast-paced effort to improve their resources. As in real life, some countries start out with more resources than others and cultural characteristics can facilitate or block negotiations.

Depending on their interests, participants use Pamoja to explore many issues and skills such as team building, policy development, negotiation, cultural sensitivity, and the value of information. Pamoja has been used in diverse settings from professional conferences to village classrooms. It requires no special equipment -- the detailed facilitator's guide provides all you need to lead a group through this enjoyable and thought-provoking experience. WLP is the exclusive publisher of this exciting and insightful simulation activity, authored by experienced librarian trainers Gail Wadsworth and Wendy D. White. If you are a Pamoja facilitator, see the Pamoja Facilitator Support page. The price within the United States is $43.95 (shipping and handling included).
